‘Give Aloha’ program kicks off for Kamuela Philharmonic
As Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra continues to advertise season tickets for its 2018-19 concert season, friends of the orchestra are encouraged to help maximize the impact of donations by participating in this year’s “Give Aloha” program. Your participation in the program directly supports the Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra’s mission to present live, high-quality orchestra music to audiences on Hawaii Island and further the musical education of local young people.
“Give Aloha,” which honors Foodland Super Market, Ltd. founder Maurice J. “Sully” Sullivan, continues his legacy of giving back to the community. Partnering with the Western Union Foundation, Foodland matches all donations up to a total of $250,000 each year for all participating nonprofit organizations. By doing so Foodland directs their charitable giving efforts toward the programs their customers consider most important. Like other worthy local 501(c)(3) organizations, the Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra has signed up to take part in this event, which runs through Sept. 30.
To take part in this year’s “Give Aloha” program, show your Makai Card when you shop at Foodland or Sack N Save during September, and ask to donate up to $249 per person to the Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra (organization code # 78508).

September brings music to historic Kailua Village
Music fills Kona’s historic Kailua Village with two free musical treats lined up for September. First up, Kupaoa the husband and wife duo of Kellen and Lihau Paik, will perform in a free one-hour concert at Kokua Kailua on Sunday. Stroll Alii Drive and enjoy the concert that will start at 5 p.m. at Emma’s Square (across from Hulihee Palace). This talented duo has received multiple Na Hoku Hanohano awards for their four CD releases including the coveted Haku Mele award.
The dancers of Halau Kaeaikahelelani, under the direction of kumu hula Yuki Ka‘ea Lyons and Lily Kahelelani Lyons Dudoit, close out September’s musical happenings with the popular Hawaiian Sunset Saturday set for 5:30 p.m. Sept. 29 on the lawn at Coconut Grove Marketplace. This monthly free community event celebrates Kona’s spectacular sunsets. As Hawaiian Sunset Saturday comes to a close, attendees are invited to extend the evening at one of many nearby restaurants.

Monthly film night at Iwa Arts and Cafe
Join the Same Canoe Local Food challenge at 6:45 p.m. Saturday for Iwa Arts and Cafe’s monthly film night. This free event is sponsored by Same Canoe. All members of the community are invited to view “The Real Dirt on Farmer John.”
Featured speakers will include Maureen Data with Adaptations Fresh Feast and Wesley and Sarah with Sundog Bread.
Doors open at 6:45 pm. and “The Real Dirt” begins at 7 p.m. Iwa will be offering a locally sourced greens, grains and plant based protein bowl and a select drink and pastry menu.

Introduction to Flameworking at Volcano Art Center
Volcano Art Center is pleased to expand its offerings of glass art workshops with “Flameworking – An Introductory Class” from 2-4:30 p.m. Sept. 22 and 23.
Flameworking, also known as lampworking or torchworking, is a type of glasswork whereby the artist utilizes a torch or lamp to melt the glass. Once in a molten state, the glass is blown and shaped with tools and hand movements, forming beads, figurines, or other similar miniature artwork.
This class is designed for the student who has never touched a torch. Instructor Nash Adams-Pruitt will teach the regions of the flame and heat base for a solid foundation from which to build flamework skills. Nash will lead the class in creating sphere forms and pendants.
Class fee is $160/$155 for VAC members plus a $40 supply fee. Attendees are asked to wear covered shoes. Advance registration is required and this workshop will be limited to six adults. To register call Volcano Art Center at 967-8222 or visit www.volcanoartcenter.org.

Announcing the People’s Choice award winners for ‘Quilts in the Forest – Where the Path May Lead’
Congratulations to the talented quartet of quilters from South Kona who won the People’s Choice Award at Volcano Art Center’s bi-annual quilt show, “Quilts in the Forest – Where the Path May Lead.”
The four-panel winning quilt was created as a collaborative effort by Valerie Brewer, Trudy Koszarek, Annabelle Treacy and Catherine Wynne. The prize, a quilt-inspired necklace made by Volcano jewelry artist Tad Sewell specifically for the event, will now be shared by the four winners.
The “Quilts in the Forest – Where the Path May Lead” exhibition was open to all full-time and part-time residents of the Island of Hawaii, whether amateur or professional quilters. The aim of this year’s show was to inspire quilters to explore new and innovative ways in quilting.

Blue Sea Artisans featured artist for Sept. is Mailander
The Blue Sea Artisans Gallery featured artist for the month of September is multi-media artist Sue Mailander.
Sue Mailander worked as fashion coordinator at a leading Los Angeles department store and then as an apparel designer in the L. A. garment industry during the ‘60s and ‘70s. Tiring of the “rat race,” she went on to learn the principles of wallpaper hanging and made of that another satisfying career.
Moving to a Kona macadamia nut farm in 1988, she welcomed the idea of working with Mother Nature. Soon after, she joined with Kailua Village Artists gallery as a working member and stayed with them for the next 23 years.
Nine years ago, Mailander joined the Blue Sea Artisans as a founding member. In 2013 the gallery become a co-operative gallery and is still run by its artist members. In 2016, the Blue Sea Artisans Gallery moved from its humble beginnings in the Kona International Marketplace to its current location in the Keauhou Shopping Center.
Visitors can meet the artist on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. when she is working at the gallery.
